Playing Out of Age Group (PLAYING UP TO AN OLDER TEAM)

Travel Only Policy

Revised 8/9/16

 AMHERST SOCCER TRAVEL POLICY

MAINTAINING PLAYERS WITHIN THEIR USYSA PLAYING AGE GROUPS

  1. IN CONCURRENCE WITH USYSA RECOMMENDED SOCCER DEVELOPMENT GUIDELINES, THE CLUB ENDEAVORS TO MAINTAIN CONSISTENCY WITHIN ALL AGE GROUPS AND WILL NOT MOVE PLAYERS BECAUSE THE PARENT THINKS THEIR CHILD SHOULD PLAY UP, FOR WHATEVER REASON, OR BECAUSE OF A DESIRE FOR CONVENIENCE TO BE WITH CLASSMATES, FRIENDS OR SIBLINGS. THIS IS GOING TO BE A RARE INSTANCE WHEN APPROVED AND WILL BE BASED UPON THE SOCCER ABILITY OF THE PLAYER, AS WELL AS CONSIDERATIONS OF EFFECTS ON THE TEAMS INVOLVED AND THE CLUB AS A WHOLE. THE CLUB WILL FORM THE MOST COMPETITIVE TEAMS POSSIBLE ACROSS ALL AGE GROUPS. (please review our articles related to soccer development).
  2. Per Board of Director Policy, only ASA’s Director of Coaching (DOC), with concurrence of the travel coordinators and the travel committee, and through prior-year observation of the player, discussion with the player’s coaches, and performance of the player at assessments will determine whether a player shall be allowed to play up on the "A" team of an older age group. No walk up play up requests will be permitted at tryouts.
  3. Players must attend their own age-group tryout. No play-ups of more than one age group will be allowed.
  4. ASA reserves the right to deny a position to any player who does not measure up to the standard of the older age group, regardless of having played up in the past.
  5. If according to the club Travel Coordinator, the player is clearly the best player in his/her appropriate age group, then we may  approach the parents and player about the possibility of trying out for the older age group team. The player may not be selected for the older team unless, upon representation by the older team’s head coach, and approved by the club, that the player is clearly one of the top 3 players in ability in the entire older age group. If this representation and approval is not given, the player will be placed on the “A” team in their appropriate age group for that season.
  6. At certain times, ASA may allow a number of players for a second or third team to play up in age to allow the formation of a team. This is usually a "b" or "c" team and is allowed because not doing so would deny many children a chance to play (ie: we have 8 each-13 year olds and 8 each 14 year olds left, we will form a 14 year old team to allow all to play and place it in a lower division). This is not considered a play up.
